When is floor renovation relevant?
The importance of floor renovation is emphasized when the condition or appearance of the floor detracts from the home's coziness. Usually floor replacement becomes relevant in the following situations:
- Worn or damaged floor: Stubborn stains, deep scratches, cracks or even moisture damage are clear signs that the floor has seen better days. A new floor makes the space cleaner and easier to maintain.
- Creaky or uneven floor: Old floor structures can loosen over time. Constant floor creaking or sagging when walking disrupts daily life. During renovation, the base is simultaneously leveled, which eliminates the problem. If you need floor leveling before installing a new floor, we can help with that too.
- Cold floor and poor insulation: Especially in old houses, the floor can be icy in winter. In connection with renovation, insulation can be increased or underfloor heating installed as desired. This creates a warmer and more energy-efficient base in the home.
- Updating the home's appearance: Trends and taste preferences in floor materials change. Perhaps you want to replace yellowed parquet with a modern light shade or old vinyl with stylish vinyl laminate. Floor renovation improves the entire interior appearance instantly. If you also want to change wall colors or wallpaper, we can help with that too.
- Increasing apartment value: If you're planning to sell your apartment, it's worth remembering that a new floor is an investment. A quality floor gives the apartment a well-maintained look and can significantly increase its selling price.
Comparing floor options – parquet, laminate, vinyl
Choosing the floor material is one of the most important decisions when renovating the floor. The most common options are parquet, laminate, vinyl and tiles, each with their own advantages and disadvantages in different applications. If you need help with floor installation, contact professionals:
- Parquet (wood floor): Real wood parquet is a valued and timeless choice. It brings natural warmth and elegance to the space. Parquet suits excellently living rooms and bedrooms where a quality and cozy atmosphere is desired. Advantages of parquet include longevity and the possibility to sand and treat the floor again after wear, so with proper care it can last decades. Note: Parquet requires regular maintenance (e.g. re-oiling or re-lacquering as needed) and is more expensive as a material. It's also not recommended for wet spaces, as wood can be damaged by moisture.
- Laminate: Laminate floor is an affordable and easy-to-maintain option that mimics the appearance of wood or tile. It's made from wood fiber board with a hard laminate layer on the surface. Advantages of laminate include its hard, scratch-resistant surface and easy installability thanks to the locking system. Laminate suits well floors in dry spaces, such as bedrooms and living rooms, especially in families with children and pets. Note: Laminate cannot be sanded or refinished, so when the surface wears through, the floor usually needs to be replaced entirely. Also need to be careful with moisture – laminate withstands some splashes but not constant wetness.
- Vinyl: Vinyl floors (e.g. vinyl planks or sheets) are versatile and water-resistant floors. They're made from PVC plastic, so they withstand moisture well and suit kitchen, hallway and even utility room. Advantages of vinyl also include soft and warm feel underfoot and good sound dampening – footsteps are heard less. Vinyl plank patterns realistically mimic wood or tile, so appearance options are plentiful. Note: Vinyl is often slightly more expensive than laminate, but on the other hand very durable even in heavy use. In wet spaces need to ensure the product suits them (e.g. fully watertight product at seams).
- Tile: Ceramic tiles or natural stone tiles are superior in wet spaces, such as bathrooms, toilets and hallways. Tile floor withstands excellently water, heat and wear. It's also hygienic and easy to keep clean – tile surface withstands well washing and chemicals. Advantages of tiles include their long service life and style; vast selection of size and pattern options available from marble to traditional tile. Note: Tile is cold underfoot without floor heating, so for living comfort heating is recommended addition even outside wet spaces. Tile seams need occasional cleaning. Also tile installation is worth leaving to a professional, as base work and waterproofing must be done correctly for the result to be durable and safe.
Floor renovation stages - planning, demolition, installation
Successful floor renovation proceeds step by step. Each work stage is important and worth doing carefully for the best result. Usually floor replacement in a private house or apartment includes the following stages:
- Planning: Careful planning is the foundation of floor renovation. First, needs are mapped: what goals the renovation has (appearance improvement, increasing practicality, floor heating, etc.) and what use the space will have. At the same time, a suitable floor material is chosen based on space requirements, budget and own preferences. In the planning stage, it's also good to accurately measure the area to be renovated, estimate costs and decide whether the renovation will be done by yourself or by a professional. Creating a schedule – when the renovation will be done and how long it's estimated to take – helps avoid unnecessary delays.
- Old floor removal: Before installing a new floor, the old floor is removed. In removal work, it's important to carefully protect other surfaces, furniture and, for example, door openings from dust and dirt. Baseboards and thresholds are carefully removed so they can be reused if possible. The floor removal itself is done carefully so the subfloor doesn't get damaged. When the old surface is removed, the subfloor condition is checked: is there a need to level unevenness or fix damage. If needed, the floor is leveled with appropriate leveling compounds and the base is carefully cleaned – the base for the new floor must be clean, dry and level.
- New floor installation: Installation of the chosen floor material is usually done following manufacturer instructions. Installation method depends on the material. Floating floors (such as laminate and vinyl planks) are installed using floating construction technique, meaning planks snap together without glue. In installation, small expansion gaps are also left next to walls so the floor can "breathe" as temperature changes. Glued floors (such as some parquets and vinyl cork floors) are attached with special floor adhesive directly to the subfloor. A professional's tool kit has the right tools, for example, for cutting laminate or grouting tile, which ensures neat work. In the new floor installation stage, you see concrete progress of the renovation as the space appearance changes from planks to tiles.
- Finishing: When the actual floor material is in place, finishing work is still done. Baseboards and thresholds are installed back (or renewed if needed), which finishes the floor and wall interfaces neatly. Possible small gaps in baseboards can be sealed, for example, with acrylic compound. Finally, the floor and room are cleaned of renovation dust. If it's a wood or parquet floor that requires surface treatment (such as oiling or lacquering), it's done at this stage according to manufacturer instructions. Now the new floor is ready for use – and it's time to enjoy the refreshed home appearance!
Why use a professional for floor renovation?
Floor replacement may seem like a DIY project, but experienced professional help is often indispensable. Contacting a professional gives confidence at every stage of renovation. Here are some key advantages of ordering floor renovation from a specialist:
- Quality workmanship: Floor installation requires precise work and solid expertise. Even a small error in the base or installation can later cost expensive repairs. A professional installer ensures the result is finished and durable. For example, when installing parquet planks, proper orientation and leaving sufficient expansion gaps are important details that an experienced craftsman knows how to consider.
- Time and effort savings: With an experienced craftsman, floor renovation proceeds smoothly on the agreed schedule. Renovation progress is planned, and as a resident you know when the work will be completed. If you try to do everything yourself without prior experience, the project can easily stretch even double the time compared to professional work. By using a professional, you also save physical labor and possible frustrations, such as problems caused by incorrect work techniques.
- Durability and guarantee: A correctly installed floor lasts significantly longer in use. A professional knows how to choose the right materials and methods for your specific site, which ensures floor longevity. Additionally, many contractors give a guarantee for their work, typically a couple of years. This means if problems arise in the floor caused by installation error during the guarantee period, the professional fixes them without additional costs. With a professional, you get not only a quality result but also peace of mind after renovation.
